As each passing day cumulates into months, and months into years, so does a person advance in physical maturity. With advancement in age, a person is said to be growing old. Advancement in age ought to be accompanied with mental, emotional and psychological maturity. There are certain behaviours that may be acceptable from a child of six years but unacceptable from a boy of twenty years. The reason is because growing old is intrinsically tied to growing up.
It is sad to note that not every body that is growing old is also growing up. Some persons are simply growing old. Imagine a man of forty years old without any disability still being housed and fed by his parents or grand parents. Imagine a person who committed a crime that resulted in a life imprisonment. Such person will simply grow old within the four walls of the prison.
To keep growing up, the mind has to be productive. A person who has lost control of the mind due to addiction to 'hard drugs' is simply growing old and not growing up. Responsibility ought to come with advancement in age.
It is possible for a man of forty years old to be a child in reasoning. He has only grown old and not grown up. It is also possible for a child of fifteen years of age to be an adult in reasoning. Two people born the same day may grow up at different rates. As such, age mates may be miles apart in growing up. This is the reason people the same age do not have the same level of success in life.
The question to ponder upon is this: are you simply growing old or also growing up?
